The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing Nigeria’s dependence on foreign artisans by expanding technical and vocational skills development programmes aimed at building a highly skilled local workforce.
Director General of the ITF, Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun, said the organisation is implementing initiatives designed to equip Nigerians with practical skills needed to meet the growing demand for qualified artisans across key sectors of the economy.
According to the ITF boss, strengthening local capacity in areas such as construction, manufacturing, welding, electrical installation, plumbing, automotive technology and fabrication will reduce the need for foreign skilled labour while creating employment opportunities for Nigerians.
He noted that the Fund is working closely with government institutions, private sector organisations and development partners to improve vocational training, modernise training centres and align skills acquisition programmes with industry needs.
Ogun explained that producing globally competitive artisans is critical to supporting Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda, improving productivity and enhancing the competitiveness of local industries.
He added that the ITF is also promoting apprenticeship schemes, entrepreneurship training and certification programmes to ensure that trainees possess skills that meet both national and international standards.
Industry stakeholders welcomed the initiative, noting that a stronger pool of skilled local artisans would lower project costs, improve technology transfer and retain more economic value within the country.
Experts observed that sustained investment in technical education and workforce development would not only reduce unemployment but also address the shortage of skilled labour affecting several industries.
They urged employers to prioritise the engagement of qualified Nigerian artisans while supporting continuous training and professional development to maintain high standards of workmanship.
Analysts believe the ITF’s renewed focus on skills development will play a significant role in advancing Nigeria’s industrial growth, strengthening local content and reducing reliance on foreign expertise in critical sectors of the economy.
