No fewer than four people have been killed following an attack by suspected armed herders on Abaushwa community in Nzorov Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State.
According to a report by Chronicle NG, the attackers stormed the community late Monday night, breaking into homes and attacking residents while they slept. Several other people also sustained varying degrees of injuries during the assault.
A resident of the community, who identified himself as Atoundo, described the attack as unprovoked, alleging that the assailants forcefully entered victims’ homes and killed them in their sleep.
He said three people died at the scene, while another victim later succumbed to injuries at the General Hospital in Gbajimba, bringing the death toll to four.
Reacting to the incident, former Executive Secretary of the Benue State Teaching Service Board, Frank Kyungun, condemned the attack, describing it as senseless and unjustified. He said community leaders had appealed to residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to carry out investigations.
Also condemning the attack, Chairman of Guma Local Government Area, Morris Orwough, announced that security personnel had been deployed to the affected community to restore normalcy, protect lives and property, and prevent further attacks.
He urged residents to remain peaceful, cooperate with security agencies and provide credible information that could assist ongoing efforts to apprehend those responsible.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Command, through its spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, said four people were killed by suspected bandits during the attack.
The police said investigations are ongoing and assured residents that efforts have been intensified to track down and prosecute the perpetrators.
