Airline Operators Caution Aviation Unions Against Flight Disruptions Over Ticket Charge Dispute

Airline operators in Nigeria have urged aviation unions to avoid actions that could disrupt flight operations as concerns grow over allegations of unremitted ticket charges within the aviation sector.

The operators said while issues relating to the remittance of statutory charges should be thoroughly investigated and resolved through the appropriate regulatory and legal channels, industrial actions that affect passengers and airline operations could have far reaching economic consequences.

Speaking through their industry representatives, the operators stressed that the aviation sector remains a critical component of Nigeria’s economy, supporting business activities, tourism and regional connectivity. They noted that any disruption to scheduled flights would inconvenience thousands of passengers, weaken investor confidence and impose significant financial losses on airlines already contending with high operating costs.

According to the operators, disagreements involving ticket charge remittances should be addressed through constructive dialogue involving the relevant government agencies, aviation unions and industry stakeholders. They maintained that collaborative engagement would produce more sustainable solutions than actions capable of grounding flight operations.

The warning follows concerns raised by aviation unions over the alleged non remittance of ticket related charges, prompting calls for accountability and compliance with existing financial obligations. The operators, however, emphasised that due process must be allowed to determine the facts surrounding the allegations before any action that could affect the travelling public is considered.

Industry analysts observed that Nigeria’s aviation sector has continued to face numerous challenges, including rising aviation fuel prices, foreign exchange constraints, aircraft maintenance costs and infrastructure limitations. They argued that prolonged operational disruptions would further strain airlines and undermine ongoing efforts to improve the industry’s performance.

The operators also appealed to the Federal Government and aviation regulators to facilitate discussions among all parties to ensure a peaceful resolution of the dispute. They said maintaining uninterrupted flight services is essential to preserving public confidence and sustaining the growth of the country’s air transport industry.

Passengers have also been advised to monitor updates from their respective airlines while stakeholders work towards resolving the disagreement without affecting scheduled domestic and international flights.
