FG Rolls Out LPG Initiative in Bayelsa to Boost Clean Energy Access

The Federal Government has launched a new Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) initiative in Bayelsa State as part of its efforts to expand access to clean cooking energy, reduce dependence on firewood and kerosene, and promote environmental sustainability.

The initiative is aimed at increasing the adoption of LPG among households and small businesses by improving accessibility, affordability and awareness of the benefits of clean energy. Government officials said the programme aligns with the country’s broader energy transition agenda and commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Speaking at the launch, officials noted that the initiative is expected to improve public health by reducing exposure to harmful smoke from traditional cooking fuels, particularly among women and children who are most affected by indoor air pollution.

The Federal Government said expanding the use of LPG would also help curb deforestation by reducing the widespread use of firewood for cooking. It added that the programme is designed to stimulate investment across the domestic gas value chain while creating employment opportunities in LPG distribution, retail and logistics.

Industry stakeholders welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward achieving universal access to clean cooking energy. They stressed the need for sustained investment in gas infrastructure, including storage facilities, distribution networks and retail outlets, to ensure the long term success of the programme.

Energy experts noted that Nigeria possesses one of Africa’s largest natural gas reserves and has the capacity to significantly increase domestic LPG consumption if infrastructure development and supportive policies are maintained. They also called for continued public awareness campaigns to encourage more households to transition to cleaner energy sources.

The Bayelsa initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to deepen domestic gas utilisation and support economic development through cleaner, safer and more affordable energy solutions. Officials expressed optimism that similar programmes would be extended to other states to accelerate the adoption of LPG nationwide.

Analysts believe the initiative could contribute to improved energy security, better public health outcomes and increased economic opportunities while supporting Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.
