Detained Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye has been admitted to an intensive care unit after collapsing during a court appearance, according to his wife, who said he is unconscious.

Besigye, one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition leaders and a long time political rival of President Yoweri Museveni, collapsed while appearing in court on Wednesday.

In a post on X early on Thursday, his wife said Besigye had lost consciousness and was receiving treatment in an intensive care unit. She did not provide further details about his condition or the cause of the collapse.

The incident has heightened concern among Besigye’s supporters and rights groups, who have repeatedly raised questions about his health and welfare while in detention.

Ugandan authorities had not immediately issued an official statement on his medical condition at the time of reporting.

Besigye has been a leading opposition figure in Uganda for more than two decades and has faced multiple arrests and legal proceedings linked to his political activities.
