BAUCHI — Farmers across selected communities in Bauchi State have received 25,000 tree seedlings from an environmental group in a move aimed at promoting afforestation, restoring degraded land and strengthening sustainable agricultural practices.
The distribution formed part of an environmental conservation initiative designed to encourage tree planting among farmers and rural communities while addressing the growing challenges of deforestation, soil erosion, land degradation and climate change.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, representatives of the environmental group said the initiative was intended to increase vegetation cover and promote greater awareness of the role trees play in protecting the environment and supporting agricultural production.
The group explained that trees contribute significantly to soil conservation by reducing erosion, improving soil fertility and serving as windbreaks that protect farmlands from strong winds.
According to the organisation, increased tree planting can also help reduce the impact of extreme weather conditions, improve biodiversity and contribute to efforts to address the effects of climate change.
The farmers were encouraged to plant the seedlings in suitable locations and ensure that they were properly nurtured to improve their chances of survival.
The environmental group noted that the success of the initiative would depend largely on the commitment of beneficiaries and the active participation of local communities in protecting and maintaining the trees.
Some of the farmers who benefited from the programme expressed appreciation for the support, describing the seedlings as a valuable contribution to environmental protection and sustainable farming.
They said the trees would provide several long-term benefits, including shade, protection for farmlands and improved environmental conditions.
The beneficiaries also pledged to plant and care for the seedlings, while calling for continued support and regular environmental awareness programmes to encourage more residents to participate in tree-planting activities.
The organisation said the distribution of the 25,000 seedlings was part of its broader commitment to promoting sustainable land management and strengthening community involvement in environmental conservation.
It added that partnerships among government institutions, environmental organisations, traditional leaders, farmers and local communities would be important in expanding afforestation programmes and protecting natural resources across Bauchi State.
The group further urged residents to discourage indiscriminate tree felling and adopt practices that would support the restoration and preservation of the environment.
