The United Kingdom has updated its financial requirements for applicants seeking Student and Child Student visas, maintaining strict proof of funds rules while exempting nationals of only three African countries from submitting financial evidence upfront.

According to updated guidance published by the UK government, citizens of Botswana, Mauritius and Tunisia may not be required to provide proof of funds at the point of application unless the evidence is specifically requested during the visa decision process.

The exemption also applies to nationals of several other countries, including Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

However, the UK government clarified that applicants from exempted countries must still meet all financial requirements and may be asked to provide evidence during the application process.

The development means applicants from major African countries that send large numbers of students to the UK, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Egypt, will continue to submit financial documents as part of their visa applications.

Under the revised requirements, Student visa applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover their tuition fees, as stated on their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, as well as living expenses.

Students studying outside London must show £1,171 for each month of their course, up to a maximum of nine months, while those studying in London are required to show £1,529 per month for the same period.

Applicants travelling with dependants must also demonstrate additional funds. Those studying outside London must show £680 per month for each dependant, while students in London must show £845 per month for each dependant, both for up to nine months.

For Child Student visa applicants, the amount required varies depending on their accommodation arrangements, including boarding school accommodation, foster care, living with parents or legal guardians, or independent living for eligible applicants aged 16 and 17.

The UK government said acceptable sources of funds include government backed student loans, official financial sponsorship, personal savings and money belonging to parents or eligible partners.

However, applicants cannot rely on overdrafts, cryptocurrency holdings, stocks and shares, pensions or funds held in unregulated financial institutions.

Applicants relying on personal or family funds must also show that the required amount has been held for at least 28 consecutive days before submitting their application. The financial evidence must be dated no more than 31 days before the visa application.

The UK continues to exempt certain categories of applicants from submitting financial evidence, including those extending their stay after spending at least 12 months in the country on a valid visa, Student Union Sabbatical Officers, doctors and dentists in training, and applicants whose nationality qualifies for reduced documentary requirements.

The latest update comes as the UK continues to strengthen oversight of its international student visa system while maintaining strict financial eligibility requirements for prospective students seeking to study in the country.
