Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received prominent Kano politicians, Senator Rufa’i Hanga and former Senator Kabiru Gaya, into the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move widely seen as strengthening the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The two political figures formally joined the APC during a meeting with President Tinubu, marking a significant political realignment in Kano State, one of Nigeria’s most influential voting blocs.
Their defection is regarded by political observers as a major setback for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, whose political influence has largely been anchored in Kano.
Welcoming the defectors, President Tinubu described their decision as a positive step toward building a stronger and more inclusive APC. Party leaders expressed confidence that the addition of Hanga and Gaya would further consolidate the party’s grassroots support and improve its chances in future elections.
The latest defections have intensified political calculations ahead of the 2027 polls, with analysts predicting more alliances and cross-party movements as political parties reposition themselves for the next electoral cycle.
While the APC celebrates the new additions, the development is expected to reshape the political landscape in Kano and could have wider implications for opposition politics nationwide.
