The Federal Government has launched an ambitious initiative to map and support 500,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen industrial growth, improve productivity and enhance the competitiveness of local businesses.
The initiative is designed to create a comprehensive database of MSMEs operating across various sectors of the economy, providing policymakers with accurate information to develop targeted interventions, improve access to finance and stimulate sustainable industrial development.
Government officials said the mapping exercise will identify the specific needs, challenges and opportunities facing small businesses, enabling authorities to implement evidence based policies that promote business expansion, job creation and increased contribution of MSMEs to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to the government, the project aligns with ongoing economic reforms aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s economy, reducing dependence on oil revenue and strengthening the manufacturing and industrial sectors. Officials noted that MSMEs remain the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, accounting for a significant share of employment and business activities nationwide.
The mapping exercise is also expected to improve access to government incentives, grants, training programmes and digital support services by ensuring that genuine businesses are properly identified and captured in national records.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major step toward addressing long standing data gaps that have hindered effective planning and policy implementation. They noted that reliable information on the MSME sector would enable better coordination among government agencies, financial institutions and development partners supporting enterprise development.
Experts believe the programme could enhance access to credit by helping financial institutions better understand the structure, size and financing needs of small businesses. They added that improved data would also support the design of capacity building initiatives, technology adoption programmes and market expansion opportunities for entrepreneurs.
The government further stated that the exercise would promote formalisation of businesses, encourage compliance with regulatory standards and strengthen Nigeria’s industrial value chains by integrating more small enterprises into local production networks.
Economic analysts say successful implementation of the initiative could improve investor confidence, increase manufacturing output and create thousands of new employment opportunities, particularly for youths and women engaged in entrepreneurship.
The mapping programme forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to accelerate industrialisation, improve ease of doing business and position Nigerian enterprises to compete more effectively in regional and international markets.
