The Indian government has carried out a major reshuffle of senior civil servants, appointing Naresh Gangwar as the country’s new Education Secretary in a move aimed at strengthening the administration of the education sector.
The appointments were approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday, July 23, as part of a broader reorganisation involving several top bureaucratic positions across key government ministries.
Gangwar, a senior officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), will assume responsibility for the Ministry of Education at a time when the government is facing intense scrutiny over recent examination paper leak scandals and demands for reforms to India’s recruitment and education systems.
The reshuffle comes just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to establish fast track courts to deal with examination fraud following nationwide student protests that disrupted parliamentary proceedings. Protesters have continued to demand greater accountability and reforms within the education sector.
Government officials said the wider bureaucratic reshuffle is intended to improve administrative efficiency and ensure experienced civil servants are placed in strategic positions to implement the government’s policy agenda across various ministries.
The Ministry of Education is expected to play a central role in implementing examination reforms, strengthening digital security for national tests and restoring public confidence in India’s education system following allegations of widespread paper leaks.
