The Anambra State Government has inaugurated the 2027 Budget Committee, charging members to ensure that the state’s next appropriation is guided by transparency, fiscal discipline and evidence based project selection.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Chukwukadibia Okoye, inaugurated the committee on Friday at the Inter Agency Board Room of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
According to a statement issued after the inauguration, Okoye urged members to approach the assignment with focus, commitment and a strong sense of ownership.
He said the 2027 budget process must be driven by transparency, discipline and integrity, stressing that the budget remained the principal tool for translating government policies and programmes into tangible development outcomes.
The commissioner said the process must remain transparent and people centred, adding that the budget should deliver measurable impact for residents while advancing Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s development agenda.
Okoye said the ministry opted for a physical inauguration to promote teamwork and shared ownership among members of the committee.
He urged members to prioritise evidence based project selection that reflected the genuine needs and aspirations of the people, stressing that projects must be selected based on merit and developmental impact.
The commissioner also called for early budget preparation, effective collaboration among Ministries, Departments and Agencies, accurate costing and realistic projections as key components of a credible budget process.
Speaking on major development challenges confronting the state, including erosion, Okoye called for proper planning and prioritisation of projects capable of addressing the most pressing needs of residents.
He urged the committee to ensure discipline, integrity and transparency at every stage of the budget process, while warning against inflated or duplicated projects.
Other priorities highlighted by the commissioner included the completion of ongoing projects, realistic projections, accurate costing, stronger synergy among MDAs, increased Internally Generated Revenue, attraction of donor support and prudent spending.
He also called for the smart prioritisation of critical needs, particularly erosion control, across the state.
Okoye expressed confidence that the committee would produce a people centred 2027 budget capable of driving sustainable development across Anambra State.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Chinyere Nwabachili, presented the 2027 budget calendar, outlining the process from community submissions to legislative approval.
The ministry pledged its full support to the committee, stating that the objective was to produce a budget that reflected the needs and aspirations of the people of Anambra State.
