Energy stakeholders have called for increased investment in mini grid systems as a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges, saying decentralized power infrastructure could significantly improve access to electricity in underserved and unserved communities.
The experts made the call during discussions on the future of Nigeria’s power sector, stressing that mini grids offer a practical alternative to extending the national grid to remote areas where conventional electricity infrastructure remains economically challenging.
According to industry stakeholders, mini grids powered by renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro and hybrid systems can provide reliable electricity to households, businesses, schools, healthcare facilities and small scale industries, thereby stimulating local economic development.
They noted that expanding mini grid deployment would help bridge Nigeria’s electricity access gap while reducing dependence on diesel and petrol generators, lowering energy costs and supporting environmental sustainability.
Stakeholders also urged governments, regulators, financial institutions and private investors to strengthen collaboration in order to accelerate investments in decentralized energy solutions. They emphasized the need for supportive policies, improved access to financing and streamlined regulatory processes to encourage greater private sector participation.
Experts observed that although Nigeria has made progress in renewable energy development, millions of citizens still lack access to reliable electricity, making mini grids an essential component of the country’s long term energy transition strategy.
They further stated that expanding decentralized energy infrastructure would create employment opportunities, encourage rural industrialization and improve the delivery of essential services in communities that remain beyond the reach of the national grid.
Industry participants expressed optimism that sustained investment in mini grids, coupled with technological innovation and effective regulation, would strengthen energy security, improve electricity reliability and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.
The stakeholders reaffirmed that achieving universal electricity access will require a combination of grid expansion, off grid technologies and public private partnerships capable of delivering affordable and sustainable energy solutions across the country.
