At least eight people have been killed as Russia and Ukraine launched attacks deep behind each other’s front lines, with both sides reporting civilian casualties in one of the latest escalations of the conflict.
Ukrainian officials said four people were killed in Russian missile and drone strikes on Thursday, July 23, with several others injured after attacks damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in multiple regions. Emergency services were deployed to affected areas as rescue operations continued.
Russian authorities, meanwhile, reported that four people were killed in Ukrainian attacks targeting Russia and Russian occupied Crimea. Officials said drones and long range strikes caused damage to civilian facilities, while air defence systems intercepted several incoming projectiles.
The exchange of attacks comes as both countries continue to expand their use of long range missiles and drones capable of striking targets far from the battlefield. Military analysts say the strategy is intended to disrupt logistics, weaken infrastructure and place psychological pressure on the opposing side.
Ukraine’s military said it was targeting facilities supporting Russia’s war effort, while Moscow maintained that its strikes were aimed at military objectives inside Ukraine. Both sides accused each other of endangering civilians during the latest attacks.
The renewed violence comes as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled, with fighting continuing along large sections of the front line in eastern and southern Ukraine. International leaders have repeatedly called for restraint and renewed negotiations, but there has been little sign of progress toward a ceasefire.
