The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has officially unveiled the three-man squad that will represent the country in the men’s 3×3 basketball event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The squad combines homegrown talent with international experience as Nigeria intensifies preparations for the multi-sport event, where the federation is optimistic about the team’s chances of challenging for a podium finish.
Selected to fly the nation’s flag are Esosa Kelvin Okundaye, Marcel Esonwune and Robert Chima Ukawuba, each expected to play a vital role in Nigeria’s campaign in one of the fastest-growing formats of basketball.
Okundaye, who hails from Benin and will wear jersey number nine, is widely regarded for his speed, athleticism and attacking instincts. Federation officials believe his ability to create scoring opportunities and thrive in high-tempo situations will be a major asset during the tournament.
Joining him is New York-based Marcel Esonwune, who will wear jersey number 12. The Nigerian diaspora star brings valuable international exposure and leadership to the squad, having developed his game through years of competitive basketball in the United States.
His experience is expected to provide stability and composure in pressure situations as Nigeria battles some of the Commonwealth’s strongest basketball nations.
Completing the squad is Robert Chima Ukawuba, who will wear jersey number four. The Lagos-born player is regarded as the team’s defensive anchor, with his physical presence, rebounding ability and defensive intensity expected to play a crucial role throughout the competition.
Officials say the trio recently completed an intensive training programme at a high-performance facility in Europe before arriving in Glasgow in peak physical condition ahead of the Games.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, describing the players as a balanced combination of youth, experience and versatility capable of competing at the highest level.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has also reaffirmed its commitment to athlete welfare by extending enhanced support packages to the basketball team, ensuring the players remain fully focused on their preparations without off-court distractions.
The improved welfare initiative forms part of the Commission’s broader strategy to help Team Nigeria achieve its ambitious medal target at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
With the popularity of 3×3 basketball continuing to grow globally, Nigeria will be hoping its carefully assembled squad can make a significant impact and strengthen the country’s reputation in international basketball.
As competition tips off in Glasgow, all eyes will be on the trio to deliver an inspiring performance and compete for Commonwealth Games honours.
