Stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy sector have called for accelerated investment in mini grid projects, describing decentralized electricity systems as a critical solution to bridging the country’s widening power access gap and driving inclusive economic development.
The experts said mini grids have emerged as one of the most viable alternatives for providing reliable electricity to rural and underserved communities where extending the national grid remains technically difficult or financially unviable.
According to industry players, expanding mini grid infrastructure would improve access to affordable and dependable electricity for millions of Nigerians while supporting small businesses, schools, healthcare facilities and agricultural activities that rely heavily on stable power supply.
They noted that renewable energy powered mini grids, particularly those driven by solar and hybrid technologies, offer cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions capable of reducing dependence on diesel and petrol generators, lowering carbon emissions and cutting energy costs for consumers.
Stakeholders also urged the Federal Government, state governments, regulators and development partners to create a more enabling environment for investors through supportive policies, simplified licensing procedures, improved financing mechanisms and targeted incentives for private sector participation.
They stressed that increased investment in decentralized energy infrastructure would not only improve electricity access but also stimulate job creation, promote rural industrialisation and strengthen the resilience of Nigeria’s energy sector.
Industry experts further observed that while grid expansion remains important, it alone cannot meet the country’s growing electricity demand. They argued that integrating mini grids and other off grid energy solutions into Nigeria’s broader electrification strategy would accelerate progress toward achieving universal energy access.
The stakeholders maintained that collaboration among government agencies, financial institutions, energy developers and local communities will be essential to ensuring the successful deployment and long term sustainability of mini grid projects across the country.
As Nigeria continues to pursue energy sector reforms, experts believe that scaling up investments in mini grids will play a pivotal role in enhancing energy security, supporting economic growth and improving the quality of life for millions of citizens without reliable access to electricity.
