The United States has announced a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia, marking a significant step in bilateral ties and opening the way for greater U.S. involvement in the kingdom’s civilian nuclear energy programme.

The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including support for nuclear power development, technology sharing and regulatory cooperation. U.S. officials said the pact is intended to strengthen energy security while ensuring that nuclear activities remain under strict international safeguards.

The deal follows months of negotiations between Washington and Riyadh over the terms of nuclear cooperation. U.S. officials said the agreement reflects a commitment to the highest standards of nuclear safety, security and non proliferation.

Saudi Arabia has long sought to develop a civilian nuclear programme as part of its broader strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil under Vision 2030. The kingdom says nuclear energy will help meet growing domestic electricity demand and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The agreement is expected to pave the way for future commercial partnerships between U.S. companies and Saudi entities in the construction and operation of nuclear facilities. However, analysts said implementation will require further technical, regulatory and commercial arrangements before major projects can begin.

The announcement comes amid broader U.S. efforts to deepen strategic cooperation with Gulf allies on energy, security and investment while reinforcing non-proliferation commitments across the Middle East.
