A French mayor has been removed from his home and placed under police protection after receiving serious threats from suspected drug traffickers, highlighting growing concerns over intimidation of public officials linked to organised crime.
French authorities relocated the mayor and provided security after intelligence indicated that criminal gangs involved in drug trafficking had threatened him over efforts to combat narcotics related crime in his municipality. Officials said the decision was taken as a precaution to ensure his safety.
French Interior Ministry officials condemned the threats, describing them as an unacceptable attempt to intimidate elected representatives carrying out their public duties. The government said law enforcement agencies had launched an investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
The threats come as France intensifies its campaign against organised crime and drug trafficking networks, which authorities say have become increasingly violent in several cities. Criminal groups have been linked to shootings, assassinations and acts of intimidation targeting public officials, police officers and judicial authorities.
Government officials reiterated their support for local leaders facing threats and said additional security measures would be provided where necessary. They also pledged to continue efforts to dismantle drug trafficking organisations and strengthen protections for elected officials.
Analysts say the incident reflects the growing influence of organised crime in parts of France, where drug-related violence has increasingly spread beyond major urban centres and placed greater pressure on local authorities and security services.
