Nineteen Convicted in Indonesia–Singapore Baby Trafficking Network

A court has found 19 people guilty of operating a cross border baby trafficking network that smuggled infants between Indonesia and Singapore, authorities said, concluding one of the region’s largest child trafficking prosecutions in recent years.

The defendants were convicted of offences including human trafficking, child exploitation and participation in an organised criminal network. Prosecutors said the group recruited pregnant women and illegally sold newborn babies to buyers through a network operating across the two countries.

Investigators said the trafficking ring targeted vulnerable women facing financial hardship, arranging for infants to be transferred using falsified documents and illegal adoption schemes. Authorities uncovered the operation following a joint investigation involving Indonesian and Singaporean law enforcement agencies.

The court handed prison sentences to the 19 defendants, with penalties varying according to each individual’s role in the trafficking network. Prosecutors said the convicted individuals included recruiters, intermediaries and facilitators who coordinated the movement and sale of the babies.

Indonesian authorities said several children rescued during the investigation have since been placed under the care of child protection agencies while efforts continue to identify their biological families where possible. Officials added that counselling and other support services are being provided to affected mothers and children.

Law enforcement agencies said the investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to pursue other suspects who may have been involved in the cross border operation. Officials also pledged to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable children.

Human rights groups welcomed the convictions, saying they send a strong message against child trafficking while urging governments in the region to improve support for vulnerable families and strengthen safeguards to prevent similar crimes.
