Heavy rainfall flooded roads across Shanghai over the weekend as a powerful storm system moved across eastern China, disrupting traffic and prompting authorities to issue weather alerts while emergency crews responded to waterlogged streets.
Torrential rain left several roads submerged, with floodwaters covering parked bicycles, scooters and vehicles in parts of China’s financial hub. Authorities deployed drainage teams to clear flooded areas and minimise disruption to transportation as heavy rain continued across the municipality.
The flooding in Shanghai comes as China’s meteorological authorities warned that persistent heavy rainfall is expected to affect large parts of southern and eastern China. The China Meteorological Administration issued a heavy rain alert, forecasting continued downpours that could trigger flash floods, landslides and disruptions to transport in several provinces.
Elsewhere, rescue operations continued in Chongqing, where a landslide triggered by days of torrential rain left multiple people dead and dozens missing. More than 1,100 residents have been evacuated from affected communities as emergency workers search for survivors and assess the risk of additional landslides. Authorities also reported that water levels in several rivers had risen above warning thresholds following sustained rainfall.
Chinese officials urged residents in low lying and mountainous areas to remain vigilant, warning that saturated ground conditions increase the likelihood of further flooding and geological hazards. Rail services on some routes have also been affected by heavy rain as authorities continue to monitor weather conditions across the country.
Scientists have warned that China is experiencing more frequent and intense extreme weather events as rising global temperatures increase the risk of heavier rainfall and flooding. Authorities said emergency response teams remain on standby as forecasts indicate that wet conditions are likely to persist in the coming days.
