The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 1.63 million pills of tramadol concealed in trucks arriving from Togo and arrested an 80 year old suspect during separate operations aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks across Nigeria.
The agency said the illicit consignment was uncovered during intelligence led operations at key entry points, where officers discovered the tramadol tablets hidden among legitimate goods in an attempt to evade detection.
According to the NDLEA, the seizure forms part of its sustained nationwide campaign against the trafficking and abuse of narcotic drugs and other controlled substances.
In a separate operation, operatives arrested an 80 year old suspect allegedly linked to drug distribution activities. The agency said the suspect was taken into custody following credible intelligence and would be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers involved in the operations, describing the seizures as another significant blow against drug trafficking syndicates operating within and across Nigeria’s borders.
Marwa reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening intelligence gathering, border surveillance and interagency collaboration to curb the flow of illicit drugs into the country.
He also urged members of the public to continue supporting the agency by providing timely information that could assist in identifying drug traffickers and dismantling criminal networks.
The NDLEA has recorded a series of major drug seizures in recent months as part of its intensified enforcement efforts, targeting traffickers operating through airports, seaports, land borders and other distribution channels.
The agency said investigations into the latest seizure are ongoing and that efforts are being made to identify and apprehend other members of the trafficking network connected to the intercepted consignment.
