At least 20 children have lost their lives following a devastating bus crash in Uganda, in one of the country’s deadliest road accidents involving schoolchildren in recent years.

The fatal accident occurred when the bus carrying the children was involved in a serious collision while travelling along a major highway. Emergency responders, police officers and local residents rushed to the scene to rescue survivors and transport the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities said several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries, with some reported to be in critical condition. Medical teams have continued to provide emergency care as officials work to establish the identities of all the victims and notify their families.

Preliminary investigations are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the possibility of excessive speed, mechanical failure, poor road conditions or driver error. Traffic investigators have begun gathering evidence to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The tragedy has sparked renewed concern over road safety in Uganda, where fatal traffic accidents remain a major public safety challenge. Road safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, regular vehicle inspections and improved driver training to reduce the growing number of crashes involving commercial and passenger vehicles.

Government officials expressed condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as a heartbreaking national tragedy. They also pledged a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and identify measures that could help prevent similar accidents in the future.

Education stakeholders and community leaders have equally mourned the loss of the young lives, urging authorities to strengthen safety standards for school transportation and improve emergency response systems on major highways.

As investigations continue, the nation remains in mourning, with many Ugandans calling for urgent reforms to improve road safety and protect children travelling to and from school. The tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of stricter transport regulations and sustained investment in safer road infrastructure to reduce preventable road fatalities.
