Indian space startup Skyroot Aerospace has become the first private company in India to successfully place a rocket into orbit, marking a major milestone in the country’s growing commercial space industry.

Skyroot’s Vikram 1 rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, carrying multiple customer payloads and experimental satellites into low Earth orbit during its maiden mission, dubbed “Mission Aagaman.” The successful launch is expected to strengthen India’s ambitions to capture a larger share of the global commercial space launch market.

The Vikram 1 is a three-stage launch vehicle capable of carrying payloads of up to 350 kilograms into low-Earth orbit. The mission carried satellites from several customers, including in orbit technology demonstrations, while also validating the rocket’s propulsion, guidance, navigation and control systems.

Founded in 2018, Skyroot Aerospace is among a new generation of Indian private space companies that have emerged since the government opened the country’s space sector to private investment and participation. The company said the successful mission demonstrates that Indian startups are capable of developing world-class launch technology and competing internationally.

Officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) congratulated Skyroot on the achievement, describing it as a significant step in expanding India’s commercial space capabilities. The launch also highlights the growing role of IN SPACe, India’s space regulatory body, in supporting private sector participation in the country’s space programme.

Industry analysts say the successful mission could attract increased domestic and international investment into India’s rapidly expanding private space sector. They note that while the maiden flight marks a historic breakthrough, Skyroot’s long term success will depend on its ability to conduct regular commercial launches and compete with established global launch providers.

The launch places India among a small group of nations where a privately developed rocket has successfully reached orbit, underscoring the country’s growing influence in the global space industry.
