Fresh legal disputes surrounding the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have heightened concerns over the future of Nigeria’s emerging opposition coalition, with political observers warning that prolonged litigation could undermine efforts to present a united challenge in the 2027 general elections.

The leadership tussle, which has continued through multiple court proceedings and is expected to reach the Supreme Court, has shifted attention away from the coalition’s broader political agenda and toward internal party disagreements. Analysts believe the uncertainty could weaken public confidence in the alliance if the dispute remains unresolved as preparations for the next election gather momentum.

The opposition coalition adopted the ADC as its political platform with the aim of uniting prominent political figures and parties ahead of the 2027 polls. However, disagreements over the party’s leadership structure have triggered a series of legal challenges involving rival factions, creating uncertainty over who has the legitimate authority to steer the party’s affairs.

Political analysts say prolonged court battles could consume valuable time that would otherwise be devoted to policy development, grassroots mobilisation and voter engagement. They warn that continued legal uncertainty may also complicate the coalition’s ability to coordinate campaign structures, recruit candidates and strengthen its nationwide support base before the election season.

Beyond the legal implications, observers argue that internal divisions risk creating mixed signals among supporters and prospective members of the coalition. They note that while the alliance was formed to provide a formidable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), unresolved leadership disputes may erode the perception of unity that is critical to winning public trust.

Despite the challenges, leaders within the coalition have expressed confidence that the legal process will ultimately clarify the party’s leadership and strengthen its institutional framework. They insist that the coalition remains committed to democratic principles and believes the judiciary will provide a definitive resolution to the dispute.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, analysts say the speed with which the leadership crisis is resolved could play a significant role in determining the coalition’s effectiveness and its ability to mount a credible challenge against the ruling party.
