Irish actress Brenda Fricker, celebrated for her award winning performance in My Left Foot and her memorable role as the “Pigeon Lady” in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has died at the age of 81.
Fricker’s death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned more than five decades across film, television and theatre. The actress became one of Ireland’s most respected performers, earning global recognition for her ability to bring emotional depth and authenticity to her characters.
She gained international acclaim in 1989 after starring in My Left Foot, where she portrayed Bridget Fagan Brown, the mother of Irish writer and artist Christy Brown. Her outstanding performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990, making her the first Irish woman to win an acting Oscar.
Beyond her historic Oscar achievement, Fricker became widely recognised by a new generation of viewers through her role in the 1992 Christmas classic Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Her portrayal of the lonely woman who befriends Kevin McCallister in Central Park became one of the film’s most memorable moments and cemented her place in popular culture.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker began her professional journey before transitioning into acting, later building a distinguished career that included television productions and acclaimed films. She appeared in several notable projects, including The Field, A Man of No Importance, Veronica Guerin and Casualty.
