According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Forum of National Youth Leaders of All Political Parties in Nigeria (FNYLPPN) has called on the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic efforts to protect Nigerians living in South Africa following reported xenophobic attacks.
The forum made the appeal in a statement issued on Tuesday after a visit to the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non Governmental Organisations at the National Assembly in Abuja.
The visit followed a formal letter submitted by the forum to the committee, expressing concern over attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, as well as the destruction of their businesses and sources of livelihood.
Led by its Chairman, Eze Onyebuchi, the forum commended the Senate Committee for responding to its concerns but stressed the need for urgent and concrete measures to safeguard Nigerians in the country.
“Appreciation must translate to action. On behalf of Nigerian youths across all political parties, the forum’s position stands, the July 31 deadline remains,” Onyebuchi said.
The forum called on the Federal Government to take immediate diplomatic action with the South African authorities, secure compensation and restitution for affected Nigerians, and strengthen consular protection through Nigeria’s mission in Pretoria.
It also urged the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States to intervene in addressing recurring cases of Afrophobia and ensuring the safety of Nigerians and other African nationals.
According to the statement, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non Governmental Organisations, Senator Aniekan Bassey, commended the forum for pursuing its concerns through democratic channels.
The forum said the committee acknowledged the Federal Government’s efforts, including the evacuation of affected Nigerians, provision of medical and financial assistance, and ongoing initiatives aimed at compensation and repatriation.
It added that the committee assured the delegation of its commitment to addressing the issues raised and prioritising the welfare and protection of Nigerians living abroad.
