Authorities in southern Texas have warned that a “worst case” flooding scenario is unfolding as torrential rain continues to batter the region, prompting dozens of water rescues and renewed fears of life threatening flash floods.
parts of South Texas have received up to 16 inches (40 centimetres) of rain, with forecasters warning that some areas could record as much as 20 inches before the storm system weakens. Officials say the city of Uvalde has been among the hardest hit, where emergency crews have carried out dozens of high water rescues and opened shelters for displaced residents.
The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings across several counties, warning that already saturated ground could lead to rapid flooding of rivers, roads and low lying communities. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared disasters in multiple counties as emergency teams continue search and rescue operations.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, remain alert to evacuation orders and closely monitor official weather updates as additional heavy rainfall is forecast through the week. Forecasters warned that the prolonged downpours could significantly worsen flooding in communities still recovering from previous severe weather events.
