A sold out Jay Z concert at New York’s Yankee Stadium was delayed for more than four hours after hundreds of people without tickets attempted to force their way into the venue, prompting officials to temporarily close entrance gates over safety concerns.

The disruption occurred on Sunday evening during the final performance of Jay Z’s three night “Extra Innings” concert series. The show, originally scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m., did not start until 12:17 a.m. on Monday after security officials worked to restore order outside the stadium.

According to a joint statement from the New York Yankees, Roc Nation, and Live Nation, hundreds of people without valid tickets overwhelmed security checkpoints, pushed past ticket holders and, in some cases, breached security barriers. Stadium officials responded by closing all public entrances for an extended period while law enforcement and security personnel managed the situation.

After taking the stage, Jay Z apologized to fans for the lengthy delay, saying the decision had been made to ensure the safety of everyone outside the venue.

“I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody was OK,” the rapper told the crowd before thanking fans for their patience.

Videos shared on social media showed large crowds gathered outside the stadium, with some individuals attempting to enter through unsecured access points before security officers intervened. Thousands of legitimate ticket holders were also left waiting outside as authorities gradually reopened the gates.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said it is reviewing the circumstances that led to the temporary closure of the entrances. Officials said there were no immediate reports of serious injuries or arrests linked to the incident.

Despite the delay, the concert went ahead as planned once the venue was deemed safe. The performance featured several surprise guest appearances, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Usher, and Pharrell Williams, marking the conclusion of Jay Z’s anniversary concert series celebrating milestones in his music career.

The incident has renewed attention on crowd management and venue security at major live events, with organisers expected to review safety procedures following one of the most significant disruptions at a New York stadium concert in recent years.
