Nigeria and Ghana have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the maritime sector as both countries seek to enhance regional trade, improve port efficiency and bolster security across the Gulf of Guinea.
The renewed partnership was underscored during high level engagements between maritime authorities from the two West African nations, where officials explored strategies to deepen collaboration in shipping, port operations, maritime safety and capacity development.
The discussions focused on improving information sharing, harmonising regulatory frameworks and promoting joint initiatives aimed at facilitating smoother movement of goods and services between the two countries. Stakeholders also emphasised the need for stronger cooperation in combating piracy, illegal fishing and other transnational maritime crimes that continue to threaten regional commerce.
Maritime officials noted that closer collaboration would support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by improving connectivity and reducing trade barriers within the region. They said efficient maritime transport remains critical to unlocking Africa’s trade potential and accelerating economic integration.
The two countries also pledged to strengthen knowledge exchange through technical training, institutional partnerships and the adoption of international best practices to improve operational efficiency across their maritime industries.
Industry experts believe enhanced cooperation between Nigeria and Ghana could boost investor confidence, increase cargo traffic and create new opportunities for businesses operating within the shipping and logistics value chain. They added that stronger maritime ties would contribute to regional economic growth by lowering transportation costs and improving supply chain resilience.
The Gulf of Guinea remains one of Africa’s busiest maritime corridors, handling a significant share of the region’s imports and exports. As trade volumes continue to grow, both countries recognise the importance of coordinated policies and joint security efforts to safeguard maritime assets and ensure uninterrupted commercial activities.
Analysts say the renewed commitment reflects a broader regional drive to modernise maritime infrastructure, strengthen institutional collaboration and position West Africa as a more competitive destination for global trade and investment. They maintain that sustained cooperation between Nigeria and Ghana will play a vital role in advancing economic integration and supporting long term growth across the region.
