Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi says the Atlas Lions are no longer the surprise package of world football as they prepare for a blockbuster World Cup quarter-final against France at Foxborough Stadium, outside Boston, on Thursday.

The clash is a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, where France ended Morocco’s historic run with a 2-0 victory before eventually losing to Argentina in the final.

Four years later, however, Morocco arrive at the last eight as genuine contenders rather than underdogs, having impressed throughout the tournament. The Atlas Lions cruised through the group stage with a draw against Brazil and comfortable wins over Haiti and Scotland.

They also fought back from a goal down to eliminate the Netherlands on penalties in the round of 32 before thrashing co-hosts Canada 3-0 in the round of 16.

Speaking after the victory over Canada, Ouahbi expressed confidence in the progress his side has made on the world stage.

“We’re no longer a surprise today, and that’s a great source of pride,” Ouahbi said.

“I think this is only the beginning, and I hope we’ll keep producing this kind of run for many years.

France have been one of the standout teams at the tournament and needed a Kylian Mbappe penalty to edge past Paraguay 1-0 in the round of 16.

Les Bleus remain favourites to reach the semi-finals, boasting an array of attacking stars led by captain Mbappe, who has scored seven goals at the 2026 World Cup and trails Lionel Messi by just one goal in the Golden Boot race.

France also have reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, who scored a hat-trick against Norway during the group stage, alongside several other elite attacking talents.

Despite France’s firepower, Morocco will believe they have the tools to cause another upset. The North Africans have built their success on defensive discipline and tactical organisation, qualities that helped Paraguay frustrate France for long periods in the previous round.

The Atlas Lions can rely on goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who has developed a reputation for producing outstanding performances on the biggest stage, while captain Achraf Hakimi continues to be regarded as one of the finest right-backs in world football.

Morocco’s hopes could hinge on the fitness of Ismael Saibari, who has scored three goals at the tournament but remains a doubt after suffering an injury during the win over Canada.

Beyond the sporting rivalry, the fixture also carries historical significance. Morocco was under French colonial rule for several decades during the 20th century, while France is home to a large population of Moroccan origin.
