Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned that no harm should come to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, urging the Federal Government and security agencies to uphold their constitutional responsibility of protecting all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation.

Atiku’s remarks come amid growing political tensions and concerns over the safety of opposition figures ahead of intensified political activities across the country. He stressed that democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere where political leaders and citizens are free to express their views without fear of intimidation or violence.

The former Vice President called on the Presidency and relevant security agencies to ensure that Peter Obi, other political actors and their supporters are adequately protected during public engagements and political events. He maintained that safeguarding the lives and rights of all citizens is a fundamental duty of government.

Political observers said the statement reflects increasing calls for tolerance, peaceful engagement and respect for democratic principles as political activities gather momentum. They noted that maintaining law and order while guaranteeing the safety of political stakeholders is essential to preserving public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Analysts also emphasised the importance of responsible political rhetoric, urging leaders across party lines to avoid inflammatory statements capable of heightening tensions. They called on political parties, supporters and security agencies to work together in promoting peaceful coexistence and issue based political engagement.

The development has renewed discussions on political security, freedom of assembly and the need to strengthen democratic institutions ahead of future electoral activities. Civil society organisations have consistently advocated for the protection of political rights and equal treatment of all participants in the democratic process.

Stakeholders maintain that Nigeria’s democratic progress depends on ensuring a peaceful political environment where divergent opinions are respected and disputes are resolved through lawful and constitutional means. They stressed that protecting political leaders and citizens alike remains critical to sustaining national stability and democratic governance.
