Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Compliance, Hon. Saeed Musa Abdullahi, has hosted the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, alongside representatives of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), to discuss rail connectivity to the Baro Inland Port.
The meeting centred on accelerating efforts to establish an efficient rail link to the inland port, a project regarded as critical to improving cargo movement, reducing transportation costs and enhancing the country’s multimodal transport network.
Participants underscored the strategic importance of the Baro Inland Port in strengthening Nigeria’s logistics and trade infrastructure. They noted that connecting the facility to the national railway network would improve the movement of goods between inland and coastal regions, decongest major seaports and facilitate more efficient freight transportation.
Hon. Abdullahi reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting infrastructure projects that promote economic growth and improve national connectivity. He stressed the importance of collaboration among government agencies, contractors and relevant stakeholders to ensure the timely delivery of projects capable of driving industrialisation and regional development.
Dr. Opeifa highlighted the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s commitment to expanding the country’s rail infrastructure in line with the Federal Government’s transportation agenda. He said strengthening rail links to strategic economic assets such as the Baro Inland Port would enhance operational efficiency and support increased commercial activities.
Representatives of CCECC expressed their readiness to continue working with government institutions to advance the rail connectivity project, emphasising the company’s experience in delivering large scale railway infrastructure across Nigeria.
Industry analysts believe the completion of the Baro Inland Port rail connection would significantly improve Nigeria’s freight logistics by providing businesses with a faster and more cost effective means of transporting cargo. The project is also expected to stimulate investment, create employment opportunities and support economic activities in the North Central region and beyond.
The renewed engagement reflects growing efforts by the government and key stakeholders to integrate rail and inland water transport as part of a broader strategy to modernise Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure, strengthen supply chains and improve the ease of doing business.
