The Federal Government has released N111 billion for the construction of the Akwanga–Maiduguri Superhighway, marking a significant step in its efforts to improve road infrastructure, boost economic activities and enhance connectivity across Northern Nigeria.

The funding is expected to accelerate work on the strategic highway, which links Nasarawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe and Borno states. The project is regarded as one of the government’s major infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening regional integration and facilitating the movement of people and goods.

Government officials said the release of the funds demonstrates the administration’s commitment to completing critical road projects that will support economic growth, reduce travel time and improve access to commercial centres across the region.

The Akwanga–Maiduguri Superhighway is expected to serve as a major transport corridor, connecting agricultural communities with urban markets and easing the movement of raw materials, manufactured goods and essential services. The improved road network is also projected to lower transportation costs and stimulate trade within the North East and North Central regions.

Beyond its economic benefits, the project is expected to improve access to healthcare, education and other social services for communities located along the highway. Residents and businesses in the affected states are optimistic that the road will open up new investment opportunities and encourage greater private sector participation in the region.

The government also believes the superhighway will contribute to national security by improving access for security agencies operating in areas that have experienced security challenges. Better road infrastructure is expected to enhance emergency response capabilities and support ongoing efforts to restore stability in affected communities.

Construction companies handling the project have been urged to ensure that work progresses according to approved timelines while maintaining high engineering standards. Officials stressed the importance of quality assurance and accountability to guarantee value for public funds invested in the project.

Infrastructure experts have welcomed the release of the funds, noting that sustained investment in road development remains essential for Nigeria’s economic transformation. They argue that efficient transportation networks reduce logistics costs, improve supply chains and increase the competitiveness of businesses across different sectors.

Stakeholders, however, have emphasised the need for timely disbursement of subsequent project funds, effective supervision and regular monitoring to prevent delays and ensure successful completion. They also called for proper maintenance plans to preserve the highway once construction is completed.

The release of the N111 billion comes as the Federal Government continues to prioritise infrastructure development as a key driver of economic growth. With several road, rail and energy projects currently underway, the administration aims to improve connectivity, attract investment and support regional development across the country.

As construction gathers momentum, the Akwanga–Maiduguri Superhighway is expected to become a vital economic corridor that enhances trade, creates employment opportunities and strengthens integration between Northern Nigeria and other parts of the country. Many stakeholders see the project as a long-term investment that could significantly improve transportation, commerce and overall economic development in the region.
