The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) recorded a significant decline in revenue, losing about N636 billion despite maintaining relatively stable crude oil production during the period under review. The development has raised fresh concerns about the company’s financial performance and the wider challenges facing Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

According to the latest financial figures released by the company, revenue fell from about N5.89 trillion in April to N5.25 trillion in May, representing a decrease of N636 billion. The drop came even though crude oil production remained largely unchanged, suggesting that factors beyond production volumes influenced the company’s earnings.

The report showed that average daily crude oil production stood at about 1.63 million barrels per day in May, compared with approximately 1.61 million barrels per day recorded in April. The slight increase indicates that production activities remained relatively stable during the period.

Industry analysts believe the decline in revenue may have resulted from fluctuations in global crude oil prices, changes in export earnings, foreign exchange dynamics and other operational factors affecting the petroleum industry. Lower international oil prices often reduce the value of crude exports even when production levels remain steady.

The company’s monthly operational report also highlighted improvements in some key areas of its operations. Fuel supply across the country remained stable, with no major disruption reported during the period. NNPC also continued efforts to improve pipeline security and reduce crude oil theft, which has long affected Nigeria’s oil production and export capacity.

The report noted that rehabilitation work on the country’s refineries is progressing, although Nigerians are still waiting for improved domestic refining capacity that could reduce dependence on imported petroleum products. The company reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening operations across the upstream, midstream and downstream segments of the industry.

Economic experts say the revenue decline reflects the vulnerability of Nigeria’s economy to movements in the international oil market. Although the country depends heavily on crude oil exports for foreign exchange earnings and government revenue, global price volatility continues to affect income generated from the sector.

They also stressed the need for Nigeria to diversify its economy while improving efficiency within the oil and gas industry. Greater investment in refining, gas development and value addition is expected to reduce the country’s exposure to fluctuations in crude oil prices.

Despite the lower revenue, NNPC maintained that it remains focused on improving operational efficiency, increasing production capacity and delivering value to shareholders and the Nigerian economy. The company said it will continue implementing reforms aimed at boosting productivity, enhancing transparency and ensuring long term sustainability.

As Nigeria seeks to strengthen economic growth and improve public finances, the performance of NNPC remains closely watched by government, investors and industry stakeholders. While stable oil production is encouraging, sustaining higher revenue will depend on favourable global market conditions, stronger operational efficiency and continued reforms across the petroleum sector.
