The Taraba State Government has warned political parties and their supporters against recruiting or arming youths for political activities, threatening arrest and prosecution for anyone who violates its anti-thuggery order.
The Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Justice, Sunday Ibrahim Maikarfi, said the order took immediate effect after it was signed. He disclosed that copies had been forwarded to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, for enforcement.
Maikarfi explained that the directive prohibits the formation of unauthorised political security groups and the use of weapons during political activities. He warned that anyone found violating the order could be arrested, investigated and prosecuted.
He also said political parties must obtain police approval for rallies and processions to ensure adequate security and prevent clashes.
According to Maikarfi, the directive applies equally to all political parties and is not targeted at any particular individual or group. He added that registered parties and duly nominated candidates must be allowed to exercise their lawful political rights without discrimination.
The government urged political actors to conduct peaceful campaigns and embrace constructive criticism as preparations for future elections continue.
The enforcement measures are intended to reduce political violence and intimidation. Their effectiveness will depend on consistent, impartial enforcement and respect for citizens’ lawful rights to participate in political activities.
