Nigeria’s Flamingos will battle Mexico for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when both teams meet in the Round of 16 in Morocco on Thursday.
The Nigerian side heads into the knockout encounter with renewed confidence after recovering from an opening defeat to Poland to secure successive victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea.
The Flamingos lost 2-1 to Poland in their first match but responded with a 2-0 win over Puerto Rico before producing an impressive 3-1 victory against North Korea to finish second in Group B with six points.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, Oluebube Umejiaku and Kanyinsola Yusuf scored in the victory over the defending champions, giving Nigeria valuable momentum ahead of the knockout stage.
Mexico also demonstrated resilience during the group phase. After opening their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain, they bounced back to beat Chile 3-1.
The Mexicans recovered from an early setback against Chile, with Mia Urbano, Citlalli Reyes and Nicole Jimenez scoring to secure the victory after Catalina Muñoz had put their opponents ahead.
Both teams have therefore shown they can respond positively to disappointment, setting the stage for a competitive contest in Salé.
However, Nigeria will need to maintain its attacking efficiency while tightening its defence after the lapses that contributed to the opening loss against Poland.
Mexico’s ability to fight back from difficult situations also means the Flamingos must remain focused throughout the encounter.
With a quarter-final place at stake, Nigeria will hope to build on its impressive performance against North Korea and continue its pursuit of the U-17 women’s world title.
