The Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State has dismissed concerns that some of its leaders’ support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid could undermine the chances of its candidates in the 2027 general elections.
The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, said voters could independently decide which candidates to support in presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives and state assembly elections.
Adewara made the clarification on Sunday while responding to questions about how the party intended to protect its candidates amid reports that some PDP members had aligned themselves with Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
He maintained that the party’s priority was to secure electoral support for its candidates in Kwara State, regardless of individual leaders’ preferences in the presidential contest.
According to him, the concerns of many residents were primarily related to the performance of the state government rather than the Federal Government.
Adewara accused the Kwara State Government of actions affecting traders and small businesses in Ilorin, including the reported flogging of market women at Oja Oba and the demolition of shops across the metropolis. These allegations were made by the PDP spokesman and have not been independently established in the party’s statement.
He insisted that Tinubu should not be held responsible for the state-level issues raised by the opposition party.
The PDP spokesman said the party remained focused on winning seats at all levels of government, from the National Assembly to the state legislature and governorship.
Asked whether the support of some PDP leaders for Tinubu could confuse voters or weaken the party’s legislative candidates, Adewara said Kwara residents were politically aware and capable of making separate choices for different positions.
He cited the 2023 elections in Erinle, where voters reportedly supported the APC governorship candidate while electing PDP candidate Taiye Afolabi to the State House of Assembly. He described the outcome as an example of voters choosing candidates from different parties during the same election cycle.
The comments come amid political realignments in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 elections, with some political figures supporting Tinubu while maintaining separate interests in state and legislative contests.
The PDP says its focus remains on local issues and its candidates. However, whether voters will separate their presidential preferences from their choices for other offices will become clearer during the election.
