Senators have declared their support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio to retain his position in the 11th National Assembly in 2027, insisting that there is no vacancy in the office.
The declaration was made during Thursday’s plenary session, following discussions involving Akpabio and other lawmakers ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Monguno, who represents Borno North Senatorial District, expressed confidence that many serving senators would return to the chamber after the elections. He said Akpabio should continue as Senate President alongside the current deputy Senate president and other principal officers, provided they secure re-election.
Senator Cyril Fasuyi, representing Ekiti North, also supported the position, declaring that the Senate presidency in the next assembly was not open for competition.
Following the statements, Akpabio asked lawmakers whether the declaration reflected the general position of the Senate. Senators responded in support when he called for those who agreed to say aye, while no audible opposition was recorded.
The development signals growing political support for Akpabio as discussions about the leadership of the next Senate gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the declaration does not automatically guarantee his return to office. The composition of the 11th National Assembly will depend on the outcome of the National Assembly elections, while senators will elect their presiding officers when the new assembly is inaugurated.
The endorsement therefore represents a show of confidence in Akpabio’s leadership rather than a formal election to determine who will lead the Senate after 2027.
