Microsoft President Brad Smith has urged governments to introduce stronger safeguards for artificial intelligence, warning that the technology is advancing without the level of oversight applied to many everyday consumer products.
Smith argued that AI systems need clearer safety requirements as they become more capable of carrying out tasks independently. He called for measures including mandatory reporting of serious incidents, independent safety evaluations and systems that allow dangerous AI operations to be stopped quickly.
The Microsoft executive also stressed the importance of holding technology companies accountable when their AI systems cause harm. His proposals reflect growing concerns about the risks associated with increasingly autonomous AI tools, particularly when they make decisions or take actions with limited human supervision.
As governments continue to develop AI policies, the challenge is to establish effective safety standards without unnecessarily restricting innovation. Smith’s comments add to the debate over how regulators and technology companies can ensure that AI development keeps pace with public safety and accountability.
