US Proposes $70,000 Fee for International Students Under OPT Programme

The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed a $70,000 fee for each international student applying for work authorisation under the Optional Practical Training programme.

The proposed rule would require schools to pay the fee for each student, with renewals costing $30,000. OPT allows eligible foreign students to gain work experience in their fields after graduation, while some STEM graduates can qualify for additional years.

The proposal could significantly affect Nigerian students and other international graduates who depend on OPT to gain professional experience in the US.

DHS said the measure is aimed at tackling fraud and abuse, describing OPT as a pathway for cheap foreign labour. Education and business groups have criticised the proposal, warning that high costs could discourage international talent and hurt US innovation and workforce development.

The public will have 60 days to submit comments before DHS decides whether to implement the rule. The proposal is also likely to face legal challenges.
