Electricity supply has been disrupted in parts of Keffi and Akwanga in Nasarawa State after three transmission towers collapsed along the Karu-Keffi-Akwanga 132kV transmission line.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said the incident occurred at about 4:06 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, during rainy and windy conditions. The transmission line initially tripped on overcurrent protection before investigations confirmed the collapse of Towers T78, T79 and T80.
TCN subsequently isolated the affected section of the line as a safety measure. As a result, all 33kV outgoing feeders at the 132/33kV transmission substations in Keffi and Akwanga became unavailable, preventing the scheduling of electricity supply through the affected feeders.
The disruption is expected to affect customers and businesses that depend on the two substations, adding to the challenges facing electricity distribution in the affected communities.
TCN said its engineers had been deployed to the site to assess the extent of the damage and determine the materials and other requirements needed to begin restoration work. The company also apologised to affected electricity consumers and said further updates would be provided as repair efforts progress.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of Nigeria’s electricity network to weather-related damage and the impact that failures in transmission infrastructure can have on electricity supply downstream.
