The Super Eagles twice came from behind to secure a dramatic 3-3 draw against Russia in an entertaining international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday.
Following their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Eric Chelle’s much-changed side showed character to end the international window on a positive note.
Chelle handed nine players their international debuts, with only six starters having previously featured for Nigeria.
Kelechi Iheanacho marked his return to the national team after more than 16 months away by opening the scoring in the 11th minute. The striker controlled Abdullahi Bewene’s pass before firing a superb left-footed effort into the top corner for his 15th international goal.
Russia responded strongly, with Lechi Sadulaev equalising in the 30th minute before Matvey Kislyak put the hosts ahead just before half-time.
Aleksey Miranchuk extended Russia’s advantage nine minutes into the second half, leaving Nigeria facing another difficult evening.
Chelle’s substitutions, however, transformed the contest. Teenage debutant Peter Edokpolor pulled one back in the 78th minute with a powerful finish after driving through the Russian defence.
Nigeria continued pressing for an equaliser and were rewarded deep into stoppage time.
Fernandez’s long header launched a counter-attack, with Umar Abdullahi supplying the final pass for substitute Akor Adams to score in the 94th minute and complete the comeback.
Although Nigeria were unable to secure victory, the performance provided encouragement after their recent setback.
The Super Eagles will return to competitive action in November when they face Tanzania in a 2027 AFCON qualifying double-header.
