More than 1,000 youths have participated in a community clean-up exercise across three locations in Calabar, Cross River State, despite rainfall.
The 2026 YOMA World Clean Up exercise was held at Marian Market, Beach Market in Calabar South and White House Street, where volunteers cleared refuse and plastic waste from the affected areas.
The initiative was organised with the support of UNICEF and implemented in collaboration with the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) and youth-led organisations.
Speaking during the exercise, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs at UNICROSS, Dr Victor Ndifon, said the university was participating directly in the initiative for the first time through its Student Affairs Division.
He said the exercise provided an opportunity for young people to contribute to the development of the state, adding that students across the three senatorial districts were willing to volunteer for similar environmental activities.
The State Coordinator of the Young African Leaders Initiative in Cross River, Freedom Bassey, said about 1,000 youths were mobilised through partnerships with youth-led organisations.
Organisers expressed hope that similar youth-led environmental clean-up activities would be extended to other parts of Cross River State.
