One person has been confirmed dead while eight others remain missing after a boat capsized on the Buruku River in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident occurred around 11am on Saturday as mourners who had travelled to attend a burial ceremony were returning to their communities.
According to the State Emergency Management Agency, three people were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment, while other passengers were also rescued.
The boat was reportedly carrying several motorcycles when the accident occurred. Officials said the engine developed a fault close to the riverbank, causing the boat to begin sinking before it eventually capsized.
The Chairman of Buruku Local Government Area, Raymond Zege, said the victims were mourners from neighbouring Gboko Local Government Area.
He said the boat was heavily loaded with passengers and motorcycles when the engine failed, making it difficult for the occupants to keep the vessel afloat.
The state Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Denis Iyaghigba, said preliminary information indicated that a strong current swept the boat into an abandoned barge, causing it to overturn.
He directed boat operators and their union to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operation.
Authorities have urged families of those aboard the boat to remain calm while search efforts continue.
