A small Amsterdam chip shop that became a viral TikTok attraction is at the centre of a legal dispute after residents complained that growing crowds are overwhelming their neighbourhood.
Fabel Friet, located on Runstraat in the city’s historic canal district, has attracted large numbers of tourists seeking its popular fries topped with parmesan and truffle mayonnaise. On busy days, queues reportedly stretch across a nearby bridge and fill the narrow street.
Nineteen residents have formally challenged the business licence, arguing that the takeaway’s limited space forces customers to wait and eat outside, creating noise, litter and congestion. They also say food waste has attracted gulls and rats.
The dispute has put Amsterdam’s authorities in a difficult position. The city acknowledges that the shop has taken measures to manage the queues and clean the area, but has also recognised that the impact on residents remains significant.
The owners say they employ cleaners several times a day and that visitor numbers have fallen since they opened four additional locations.
The case highlights a wider problem facing tourist cities, where social media can turn small businesses into unexpected attractions and place heavy pressure on residential neighbourhoods.
The court is expected to rule on the case on November 12.
