OpenAI Safety Employee Resigns, Warns ‘Time for Trial and Error Is Over’

David Robinson, a former OpenAI safety employee, has resigned from the company and criticised its approach to developing increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.

In an essay published on Saturday, Robinson said AI companies are moving too quickly and are not exercising enough caution as their systems become more capable. He argued that the industry needs to place greater emphasis on safety expertise and research before advancing to more powerful models.

Robinson worked at OpenAI for three and a half years, helped develop its Preparedness Framework and oversaw safety reports for 12 frontier-model launches. He criticised OpenAI’s reliance on what it calls “iterative deployment”, in which systems are released and safety measures are strengthened when problems emerge.

He argued that approach becomes increasingly risky as AI systems gain greater autonomy, saying the industry can no longer depend on fixing serious problems after they occur. Robinson called for safety practices similar to those used in high-risk industries such as aviation and nuclear power.

OpenAI rejected the suggestion that it is not taking safety seriously, saying it continues to strengthen security, monitoring and third-party evaluations and can pause training or hold back models when necessary.

Robinson’s resignation adds to a growing debate over whether AI companies can maintain safety standards while competing to develop increasingly advanced systems.
