The Minority Leader of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, has criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying Nigerians have little to celebrate as the country marks its 66th Independence anniversary.

Magaji, who represents Bodinga North Constituency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks in Sokoto while assessing the performance of the Tinubu administration.

According to him, the Federal Government has not done enough to address the economic and security challenges confronting Nigerians, particularly residents of northern Nigeria.

He questioned the significance of some of the Federal Government’s infrastructure initiatives, saying the much-publicised Illela-Sokoto-Badagry superhighway alone was not sufficient to address the challenges facing the people.

The lawmaker also raised concerns over insecurity in Sokoto State. He claimed that 21 of the state’s 23 local government areas were vulnerable to bandit attacks, leaving many residents exposed to displacement and insecurity.

Magaji said the situation had forced some residents to relocate to Sokoto metropolis for safety, adding that he was personally accommodating more than 20 displaced persons in his four-bedroom residence.

He compared the current security situation with the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, claiming that only seven local government areas were affected by banditry during the period he referenced.

The lawmaker’s comments came as political actors across the country offered differing assessments of the Tinubu administration on Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, with supporters highlighting ongoing reforms and critics pointing to economic hardship and insecurity.

Magaji’s remarks therefore form part of the wider political debate over the government’s performance and the condition of Nigerians as the country enters another year of independence.
