The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has reaffirmed that the council is not involved in partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Sultan made the clarification on Thursday during the NSCIA General Assembly in Abuja, amid increasing political consultations and mobilisation ahead of the elections.
He said although politicians and political groups had begun reaching out to members of the council, the NSCIA would maintain its position as a non-partisan organisation.
The Sultan disclosed that he had received representatives of the campaign councils of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, while other political actors were also expected to visit.
He explained that the council would receive political delegations from across party lines and communicate the same message to them about the identity, principles and responsibilities of the NSCIA.
“I’m not a member of any political party and we have nothing to do with politics,” the Sultan said, stressing that the council’s engagements with political actors should not be interpreted as partisan involvement.
He also dismissed suggestions that the NSCIA’s recent national prayer was politically motivated, saying the gathering was organised to pray for peace, security and the wellbeing of Nigeria.
The Sultan urged members of the Muslim community to remain united and contribute constructively to national affairs while protecting their religious rights and respecting the rights of people of other faiths.
The development comes as political parties and their candidates intensify consultations with traditional, religious and community leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
