The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disclosed that 9,324,349 young Nigerians were newly registered during the 2026 Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise.
INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figure on Wednesday in Abuja during the investiture of nine new and returning INEC Youth Ambassadors.
Amupitan, who was represented by National Commissioner, Prof Rhoda Gumus, said the number highlighted the importance of youth participation in Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election.
He said the commission appointed the Youth Ambassadors to strengthen its engagement with young Nigerians and encourage greater participation in the electoral process.
The chairman urged the ambassadors to promote voter awareness, peaceful participation and responsible citizenship, while helping to counter electoral misinformation.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Outreach and Partnership Committee, Prof Kunle Ajayi, also urged young Nigerians to reject electoral violence and manipulation.
He advised the ambassadors to promote accurate electoral information and encourage responsible online engagement, stressing the need for young people to verify information before sharing it.
INEC said its Youth Ambassadors Initiative, established in 2014, is designed to promote voter education and informed participation among young Nigerians.
The nine ambassadors include Amal Umar, Christopher Yohanna, Alex Kool Ibeh, Mike Godson, Emmanuel Ikubese, Seun Ajayi, Ibrahim Tukur Bello, Sunday Agbaji and Thompson Ukeki.
