Portugal defender Nuno Mendes has said the decision concerning Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with the national team is not one for the players to make.
Mendes spoke after Portugal’s 4-2 victory over Denmark, saying the squad is focused on its upcoming match at the Estádio do Dragão and on carrying out the instructions of coach Jorge Jesus.
“He is a player for the national team, and we are more focused on what we have to do now and on what the coach wants to bring to us,” Mendes said.
“As for the rest, it’s not for us to decide,” he added.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender also said the squad would welcome any player who joins the team, leaving the decision on Ronaldo’s situation to the relevant authorities and coaching staff.
Ronaldo unexpectedly left Portugal’s training camp ahead of the Denmark match following discussions with Portuguese football officials. His departure has raised questions about his future with the national team, although no final decision has been announced.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has also urged the team to concentrate on its matches before addressing the Ronaldo situation.
