Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho has been named the best player of the opening eight rounds of the Turkish 1. Lig following his remarkable start to life at Bursaspor.
Iheanacho received the recognition during the beIN 1. Lig programme, where moderator Turgay Keskin and commentator Tunç Kayacı also selected Bursaspor as the best-performing team of the opening stages of the campaign.
The 29-year-old forward has been in sensational form since joining Bursaspor as a free agent this summer, scoring 11 goals and providing two assists in eight league appearances.
Iheanacho has found the net in every league match he has played for the club, playing a major role in Bursaspor’s impressive start to the season.
The Turkish side have won six and drawn one of their opening eight matches, collecting 19 points to sit at the top of the second-tier standings.
His latest contribution came on September 19 when he scored twice, including an 85th-minute winner, as Bursaspor fought back to defeat Batman Petrolspor 2-1.
The brace extended Iheanacho’s scoring streak to eight consecutive league matches and saw him equal a Bursaspor club record previously set by Brazilian striker Fernandao during the 2014/15 season.
His outstanding performances have also earned him a recall to the Super Eagles, with coach Eric Chelle naming him in Nigeria’s squad for the October 6 international friendly against Russia.
Iheanacho joined Bursaspor after leaving Scottish champions Celtic, where he won the league and cup double last season. Before his move to Scotland, he had spells with Sevilla and Middlesbrough.
With his goals continuing to drive Bursaspor’s promotion campaign, Iheanacho has quickly emerged as one of the most influential players in the Turkish second tier.
